HOFCD distributed free chelation therapy medicines and other essential medications to thalassemia patients in Mailsi and Vehari, preventing iron overload complications and saving lives.
HOFCD distributed free chelation therapy medicines to 45 thalassemia patients in Mailsi and Vehari. Chelation therapy is essential for thalassemia patients who receive regular blood transfusions — each transfusion introduces iron into the body, and without chelation medicines, this iron accumulates in vital organs including the heart, liver, and endocrine glands, causing life-threatening complications.
The Challenge of Chelation Costs
Chelation medicines in Pakistan can cost PKR 3,000–8,000 per month per patient. For poor families, this expense is often impossible to manage — many patients stop therapy, leading to iron overload complications and early death. HOFCD's medicine distribution program bridges this gap entirely.
Medicines Distributed
- Deferasirox (Exjade/Asunra) — oral chelation tablets
- Deferiprone (Ferriprox) — iron chelation capsules
- Folic acid supplements
- Hydroxyurea for eligible patients
All medicines were sourced through NGO donation channels and distributed free of charge. HOFCD plans to conduct medicine distribution drives quarterly to ensure no patient misses critical therapy.
