HOFCD Nutrition Support Program for Thalassemia Children — Building Strength Beyond Transfusions

HOFCD launched a nutrition support initiative for thalassemia children in Mailsi, providing nutritional food packages, dietary guidance, and supplements to strengthen child patients beyond medical treatment.

Thalassemia treatment goes beyond blood transfusions. Children with thalassemia major require optimal nutrition to maintain their health, support growth, and complement medical treatment. However, many families in Mailsi and Vehari struggle to provide adequate nutrition alongside the financial demands of medical care.

HOFCD launched a dedicated Nutrition Support Program providing monthly food packages and dietary guidance to 30 thalassemia children enrolled in the patient support program.

What Each Package Contains

  • High-protein food items (lentils, pulses, eggs)
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables (seasonal)
  • Multivitamin supplements appropriate for thalassemia patients
  • Dietary guidance sheets for parents in Urdu

Dietary counseling sessions were also conducted for mothers, teaching them how to prepare iron-safe meals and avoid foods that increase iron absorption, which can worsen iron overload in thalassemia patients receiving transfusions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Thalassemia patients receiving regular transfusions should actually AVOID iron-rich foods like red meat and iron-fortified cereals, as they already receive excess iron through blood. HOFCD's dietary counseling helps families understand this.
